You can use it as a wireless speaker for local media, but most of the useful functionality relies on an internet connection. While Google Home is a decent enough speaker, you can find better wireless speakers for less money if you don't plan on connecting to the internet. The difference is clear when you listen to the two assistants speak. With the Echo Dot, Alexa's voice is a little tinny-sounding, and music playback not much better than what you'd get from your phone.

Google Home Mini review: A great alternative to the Amazon Echo Dot
Google Assistant has been chasing Alexa since Google debuted it in 2016. Google Home Mini joined the race late last year to chase the popular, affordable Echo Dot. At this point, Google Assistant is just as capable as Alexa, so the Mini is a great alternative to the Dot, especially since both speakers cost just $50. He's reviewed everything from vacuum cleaners to beer brewing robots in pursuit of the perfect smart home.

The Nest Mini is slightly smaller than the Home Mini, but the difference is minute enough that it barely matters. Nest is a company that Google purchased and folded into their own line of smart devices. The Nest name has subsequently been attached to various devices, including an improved version of the Google Home Mini.
Google Nest Mini's speakers also produce a higher-quality sound compared to the older model. The design of both speakers is almost identical as they are the same size and have a fabric covering. The major difference is that the Nest Mini features recycled materials. The Nest Mini has LED lights illuminating the center when Google Assistant is in action. It looks similar to Google Home Mini in size, but the new version has a wall mount, which is quite convenient. It has a similar design and language to the Google Home Mini.
So the Nest Mini is essentially just a slightly more expensive, and slightly better, version of the Google Home Mini. While there are privacy concerns with a device like Google Home Mini that is always listening for a wake word, Google is fairly transparent with what it records. You can access all of the recordings through your Google account and even turn off recording, although that does prevent some Google Home features from working. Still, the feature is handy when you're asking about your calendar appointments, or asking it to call Mom (and not, say, your roommate's mom). The Google Assistant uses the power of Google's search engine to handle tough, specific questions better than Alexa does. The one exception was my "limbo" test, where I try to wake each speaker from roughly 20 feet across the room using an increasingly quiet voice. The Echo Dot was able to respond to noticeably lower levels than the Mini.
